Mission
The mission of the Barre City Elementary and Middle School PTO is to provide volunteer support in the school and community while creating a positive school spirit.

PTO Sponsored Events
Regularly scheduled events include:

WALK, RUN, FUN - September
A school wide wellness and fundraising event,  students get sponsors and raise money for their classrooms for field trips.  On the day of the event students participate in a warm-up and walk or run, followed by a healthy snack.  This is a very popular event with students!

PTO Family Bingo Night – November
Usually around the first week of November, the PTO sponsors a fun family night of bingo.  The charge is $2 per card and the whole family is welcome to play.  The PTO purchases prizes for the event and no one goes home empty!  A 50/50 raffle was held and this year we offered Pizza at $2 a slice and ice cream.  This year’s event raised $100 for the BCEMS Pawsitive Paws Program!

Valentine’s Day Carnation Sale - February
On or around Valentine’s Day, students and families are offered the opportunity to pre-order carnations for themselves or for giving away.  The PTO sorts and packages all orders and distributes them to the classrooms for the children to take home.  The Carnation Sale benefits the BCEMS Reading is Fundamental Program.

PTO Plant Sale – May
Approximately two weeks before Memorial Day, we hold our annual plant sale.  Flowers are pre-sold to families as well as a variety of cash/carry items available the day of the sale.  All proceeds benefit the BCEMS Mentor program.

Teacher Appreciation Week - May
Every year, in the month of May, the PTO prepares fruit platters for our BCEMS staff in honor of teacher appreciation week.  We also purchase fruit pops for the entire student body and staff to show our appreciation of everyone’s support.

T-Shirt/Sweatshirt Sale - Spring
The PTO holds a school wide BCEMS t-shirt/sweatshirt sale.  All families and staff are welcome to purchase these items.

Where does the rest of the money go?
From box tops and sponsored events, we have been able to purchase and donate picnic tables for the BCEMS grounds.  We present four savings bonds to 8th grade students at graduation each year.   We present one student the Brandon Bernier Scholarship – a two week scholarship to Lotus Lake Camp.  This is presented to a student who was in Brandon’s class.  This award will follow Brandon’s class through 8th grade.   We have been able to provide ski/snowboarding partial scholarships to the BCEMS ski program on a yearly basis. The ski/snowboard program runs for six weeks.  Students and chaperones/parents drive to Sugarbush on Sundays for a fun day of lessons and skiing.  Students can earn a scholarship by writing an essay which Co-Principal James Taffel evaluates.

Meetings:
Everyone is welcome to come to the monthly meetings to share, listen and offer new ideas.  Meetings are generally held on the 1st Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.  See the BCEMS newsletter for any variations in our meeting schedule.  For more information, please contact our PTO Coordinator Sonya Spaulding at 476-5569 or e-mail her at sspaulding@milessupply.com

Price chopper tools for school

Page1The Tools for School program at Price Chopper is very simple.  All you have to do is go to Price Chopper and have them register your Advantage Card with BCEMS.  The BCEMS school code is 15289—you will need to supply this when registeringYou can also register online at www.pricechopper.com.  Once you are registered, all you have to do is shop at Price Chopper and the school receives 1 credit point for every dollar you spend.  It’s that easy.  These credits are then used to purchase computers, school equipment, etc. for the school.  So have everyone you know register their Advantage Cards with the BECMS school code and we’ll be earning tools for our school in no time!Box tops and soup labels collection

Page2 Page4Page3

WE NEED YOUR HELP!  BCEMS participates in the Campbell Soup label program.  The school is given credit for every label it collects which can then be used to purchase items for the school.  You need only submit the UPC portion of the label being careful not to tear the label.  BCEMS also participates in the Box Tops for Education Program.  All you have to do is look for the Box Top for Education symbol on the box top, (as shown on above) clip it out carefully, and send them into school.  BCEMS receives 10 cents, in cash, for every box top passed in.  So far this year, box top collections have totaled $611.  Go to www.boxtops4education.com for participating box top brands.  Specially labeled bins are located in the school for children to deposit them in.   For questions or additional information on this program, please contact Shelley Morton at shellmo@myfairpoint.net
