 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

Preamble:
This document outlines the proper and acceptable use of all aspects of the Barre Supervisory Union (BSU) computers.

Educational Purpose:
Barre Supervisory Union computers enhance school curriculum by serving as a resource for improving and enriching the teaching and learning in the Barre schools.

Privilege:
Use of the Barre Supervisory Union computers is a privilege --- not a right. Inappropriate use will lead to disciplinary action which may include restriction or cancellation of computer privileges. Commonly accepted guidelines for developmentally appropriate skills will apply.

Responsibilities:
All users assume full liability - legal, financial or otherwise - for their actions when using the Barre Supervisory Union computers.

Involvement in these or any associated activities will result in disciplinary action.

" involvement in any activity prohibited by law, including copyright violations.
" hacking, including the accessing, storing, transferring, altering, deleting, installing or downloading files without authorization.
" attempting to establish commercial ventures on the network for the selling or trading of personal property
" involvement in online games
" storing, printing, or transferring harmful or deliberately offensive materials
" transferring "chain" type letters
" sharing passwords, logins or information in violation of the "Maintenance of Student Records" Policy

USERS WILL:
" use BSU computers for authorized purposes only
" use only software authorized by BSU
" respect the normal and proper operation of BSU equipment
" respect the rights and privacy of others to use BSU equipment or services
" not change computer files that do not belong to the user
" engage only in chat, e-mail, or other electronic communication approved by authorized staff.

Copyrighted materials:
All users will respect copyright laws and software licensing agreements. They will acknowledge their sources and will not copy software without permission.

Privacy:
Authorized BSU staff may inspect any materials transferred through or stored on a BSU computer for any reason at any time without prior notice. They have the right to remove inappropriate materials and to take disciplinary action. There should be no expectation of privacy for files stored on the system.

Use of the Barre Supervisory Union computers is a privilege - not a right. Inappropriate behaviors will lead to disciplinary action which may include restriction or cancellation of computer privileges, suspension, expulsion, and/or legal action.
