Barre City Elementary & Middle School held their first Empty Bowls Dinner at the Old Labor Hall in Barre on Thursday, May 22nd from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. The event was open to all community members!
The students in 8th grade and 6th grade created ceramic food safe bowls. The project received a grant from the Vermont Arts Council to bring in a local renowned potter, Pam Wilson, as an Artist-In-Resident, to work with the students in their ceramics art classes.
The students sold their bowls, served dinner and held a pottery raffle. There were also BCEMS music students performing at the event!
The students raised $1,510 from the sale of their ceramic bowls and that money will go to Capstone Community Action and Meals on Wheels. The symbolism of an empty bowl is a reminder that there are many families who face food insecurity. Families come together and share a meal together. Community members are able to contribute to fighting food insecurity. The students' artwork ends up helping their community. Art can inspire and bring people together!
